Timeless Treasures Fabrics

New York, NY 10013

Official contest rules are available here.

Remember, photos of your quilt or sewing project must be sent by or before June 1st, 2012 to be considered.

If you’re still brainstorming what to make, check out Alice Kennedy’s mood board for inspiration, which she put together in Spring 2011. This was part of the creative process in developing her Orange Crush collection, released in Fall 2011:

With these mouth-watering colors popping up everywhere, it’s no wonder Pantone named “Tangerine Tango” color of the year for 2012.

Tell us what’s been inspiring you! Have you been using mood boards like the one shown above? Whipping up a Tangerine Souffle as a testament to your impeccable color taste and culinary skill? Keeping a dream journal next to your bed for that next “a-ha!” moment? We’d love to know!

The Power of Mini Projects!

Lena-c9045-multi makes a perfect binding for a mini quilt!

Sometimes, all you have are a few minutes. Add these minutes up, though, and you get hours, days, even months! Anyone who wants to create more in 2012 will appreciate these three quick ways to stretch your imagination and stitch scraps of time together.

1. Block a Day: On her the Facebook page of the same name, Timeless Designer Karen Snyder encourages you to break down projects into manageable pieces. Is there a quilt you are dying to make? Start NOW! One block a day is all it takes. Need ideas? Our free patterns page provides tons of inspiration and features our latest prints, including Bella Verona and Tonga Coco Berry. Then be sure to take a peek at Karen’s charming new collection, Bavaria!

2. 15 Minutes Play: Prolific quilter and founding member of NYC Mod Quilt Guild, Victoria Findlay Wolfe gives you the freedom to play with fabric just 15 minutes at a time. That’s right, PLAY and share your creations on her blog! Her theory is that in 15 minutes of free and fun sewing time, you can grab time for yourself AND make something fabulous. Sounds like a Win/Win!

3. Mini-Quilts: Working out an original pattern? Shrug off the pressure of a large project and bring your ideas right to the machine, or sew by hand! Test drive colors, shapes, and even techniques! Love the end result? Frame it! Not so much? We’re sure there’s a dolly somewhere that needs a new blanket . . .

Check out this Mini-Quilt tutorial by Liberty Biberty and give it a try with Bavaria!

A Gift of Love

With a brand new year just around the corner, our minds are swirling with resolutions and we know yours are too! Challenging yourself to do more sewing? Here’s a little inspiration from Felicity Anderson-Moore, a very talented 12-year-old who designed and sewed a quilt from our Elephants on Parade collection and donated it to Victorian Garden, a home for elderly adults. In addition to sewing, Felicity is an avid ballerina, and starred in The Nutcracker at Brooklyn Academy of Music this season. Talk about multi-tasking!

Of her quilt, Felicity had this to say:
“I wanted to have it done for Christmas to give to the nursing home that my Grandma Lenore went to for the last five years. I decided to call the quilt ‘Elephants Never Forget’ because she had Alzheimer’s. I used the ribbon from the package you sent because it said Timeless Treasures and the people there are treasures we will remember forever. The hearts are for love and the packages show everyone’s individual gifts. I made the elephants decorating the tree and coming out of the chimney to show that memories are still there, but get confused and mixed-up.”
Beautiful work, Felicity!

Wishing you a Happy and Safe 2012, full of festivities, fun, and of course, fabric!

Know a couple that cooks together? These mitts make the perfect his-&-hers set. We can already smell the cookies baking!

Delight in the details! Red stitching and holiday-c8147 black fabric make this this mitt extra festive!

Our Favorite Desert: Apple Skillet Crisp

It’s a week before Christmas and we’ll bet you are wildly busy finishing up last-minute gift projects.

Need a snack while stitching? Try our Favorite Dessert, Apple Skillet Crisp from Cook’s Illustrated, transcribed by one of our favorite foodie blogs, First Look, Then Cook. (Secret Ingredient Alert: Apple Cider, which punches up the apple flavor.)

While you’re munching,  take a look at an easy-breezy tutorial for basket liners by Running with Scissors. They would be adorable made in Hoodie’s kitschy-cute apple fabric. Pack your fabric-lined basket with small gifts and you have the perfect DIY present and wrapping, all in one!

Grab the recipe for the delectable Apple Skillet Crisp below. It makes an amazing addition to any holiday meal and fills your kitchen with sweetness! Now all you need is ice cream . . .

Apple Skillet Crisp from Cook’s Illustrated:

Ingredients

Topping

  • 3/4 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup pecans, chopped fine (optional)
  • 3/4 cup old-fashioned rolled outs (see note)
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon table salt
  • 8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted

Filling

  • 3 pounds Golden Delicious apples, peeled, cored, halved, and cut into 1/2-inch-thick wedges
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • 1 cup apple cider
  • 2 teaspoons juice from 1 lemon
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

Preparation

Make the topping:  Adjust the oven rack to the middle position and heat oven to 450 degrees.  Combine flour, pecans, oats, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a medium bowl.  Stir in butter until mixture is thoroughly moistened and crumbly.  Set aside while preparing the fruit filling.

Make the filling:  Toss the apples, granulated sugar, and cinnamon (if using) together in a large bowl;  set aside.  Bring cider to a simmer in a 12-inch oven-safe skillet over medium heat; cook until reduced to 1/2 cup, about 5 minutes.  Transfer reduced cider to a bowl or liquid measuring cup; stir in lemon juice and set aside.

Heat butter in a now empty skillet over medium heat.  When foaming subsides, add apple mixture and cook, stirring frequently, until apples begin to soften and become translucent, 12 to 14 minutes.  (Do not fully cook apples.)  Remove pan from heat and gently stir in cider mixture until apples are coated.

Sprinkle topping evenly over fruit, breaking up any large chunks.  Place skillet on baking sheet and bake until fruit is tender and topping is deep golden brown, 15 to 20 minutes.  Cool on a wire rack until warm, at least 15 minutes, and serve.

Note:  If your skillet is not oven-safe, prepare the recipe and transfer the cooked apples into a 13×9 inch baking dish.  Top the filling as directed and bake for an additional 5 minutes.  Do not use Granny Smith apples for this recipe, but you could use other apples such as Honey Crisp or Braeburn.  While rolled oats are preferable in the topping, quick oats may be substituted.  Serve the apple crisp warm or at room temperature with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream – or just by itself.
